Supersize PU sculptures take over Tallinn

Estonia’s biggest performing arts festival attracts all kinds of weird and wonderful exhibits, but none as spectacular as the eight supersize sculptures unveiled at last year’s annual event.


The four-meter high figures that took a starring role in the 2011 Tallinn Treff Festival were all made, shaped and carved out of polyurethane foam PENOSIL.

To mark Tallinn’s role as European Capital of Culture 2011, Wolf Group's Krimelte, Europe's leading insulation foam and sealants manufacturer, teamed up with the Estonian State Puppet Theatre and Tallinn City Center Administration to set up an exciting creative challenge.

Local artists and architects were invited to create sculptures using Krimelte’s Penosil building foam. Normally used to seal doors and windows, and fill gaps to provide soundproofing and better thermal insulation, OCF solutions can reduce air leakages in properties by up to 40%.

Eight renowned Estonian artists stepped forward to carve a foam sculpture representing an individual who has made a major impact on Estonian culture.

Jaan Puusaag, Chairman of Krimelte, said: “Penosil foam is a practical building material. When applied as intended it makes a real difference to the energy efficiency of buildings, improving comfort and wellbeing for occupants. This challenge put our foam through its paces in a completely different way. It was fascinating to see it manipulated to such great artistic effect in an initiative that has raised awareness of polyurethane foam as a useful building material.
